KAMUNTING: Bone cancer patient, Nurul Atikah Bazilah Samsudin, 14, died peacefully at her home at Taman Mewah here at 11.05pm yesterday.
Nurul Atikah had been in the news after she spoke to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over the phone after arrangements by the Children's Wish Society of Malaysia.
Her mother, Che Tom Osman, 45, who was reported in the New Straits Times on Friday as having lost her job as a factory supervisor for taking too much leave to look after her daughter, was crying uncontrollably when contacted yesterday.
She said: "Nurul Atikah's last words to her father (Samsudin Hazbullah, 48) was that she was feeling very, very tired.
"She then closed her eyes and passed away peacefully."
Nurul Atikah will be buried before Zohor prayers today.
She was diagnosed with bone cancer two years ago and had since undergone 12 surgeries.
The once-active girl was in constant pain and needed morphine to cope with the debilitating effects of the cancer.
When given the chance to speak to Najib, Nurul Atikah broke into a big smile, according to her father.
During the brief conversation, Najib asked the girl, who was suffering from stage four cancer, how she was doing and also about her parents.
Nurul Atikah, whose speech was impaired due to her condition, put up a great effort to wish Najib a "Selamat Hari Raya" at the end of their conversation.
