KUALA TERENGGANU: They may have to undergo surgeries to be separated but the conjoined twins of Zullkifli Ngah, 41, were officially registered as individuals when they got their birth certificates yesterday.
Zullkifli said he was happy as the family could now refer to the twins by their names.
"Instead of just 'the twins', they are now officially named Nor Shazwanie and Nor Shazrinie Zullkifli," he said as he showed the New Straits Times the babies' birth certificates outside the National Registration Department's office here yesterday.
"Although she is older by one minute, Nor Shazwanie is the smaller of the two."
Zullkifli said he was going to apply for aid from the state government's Darul Iman Welfare Fund.
"After having them registered, I can now list Nor Shazwanie and Nor Shazrinie in the application form," he said, adding that both the babies were in good health at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.
"They are still being fed baby formula through tubes. Otherwise, they are fine."
Zullkifli said his wife, Noraini Mohamad, 31, and their two daughters, aged 6 and 7, were staying at his mother-in-law's house in Kampung Padang.
"I had transferred my eldest daughter to a primary school here a week before the babies were born as I had foreseen the long hospital stay after doctors told me about the complications in my wife's pregnancy."
Zullkifli said donations started coming in after the babies' story was highlighted by the NST last Thursday.
"I would like to thank those who had donated in my hour of need."
