GUANGZHOU: Lee Chong Wei's bid to end Malaysia's wait for a first World Championships title ended in heartbreak at the Tianhe Indoor Stadium today as China's Lin Dan sealed a historic fifth crown.
The match was finely poised after Chong Wei had won the first game 21-16 and Lin Dan the second 21-13.
The decider was a tight affair but Lin Dan was the player in control.
The match, however, took a dramatic turn when the two-time Olympic champion led 19-16 in the third game.
Chong Wei asked for medical attention at that point with the tournament doctor applying pain-killing spray on the Malaysian's hamstrings.
Chong Wei then continued and won the next point but Lin Dan held matchpoint when Chong Wei become immobile at 20-17.
The Malaysian was unable to continue after that and Lin Dan won a record-breaking fifth world title.
Chong Wei missed the medal presentation ceremony while Lin Dan, a wild card entry after not playing since his London Olympics triumph, celebrated his win.
