KUALA LUMPUR: Thieves have come up with a new modus operandi to rob offices. They pretend to be carpet cleaners or wiremen.
“However, these criminals still prefer to strike when nobody is around,” said MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong.
He said thieves had even stolen items on two occasions from Wisma MCA when offices were left unlocked or unattended.
“One thief stole a laptop computer while another stole a camera.
“They moved very fast and were gone within a minute. Lucky for us, CCTV cameras managed to capture them in action and we know what they look like,” Chong said at a press conference yesterday.
He said he had also received complaints from five offices located at the Fraser Business Park here that they had been broken into as well.
Chong said only two offices had installed CCTV cameras and managed to capture images of the intruders. All the five victims have lodged police reports.
He urged office staff to be vigilant and always check if cleaners were really hired before allowing strangers into the office.
“Also remember to lock doors at all times and install CCTV cameras just to be safe,” said Chong, who also reminded people not to fight back as the thieves could be armed.
“In the CCTV footage we watched, the thieves were carrying folded newspapers which could be hiding knives. If they break in, just let them take what they want. It is not worth your lives,” he said.
