KOTA KINABALU: Borneo island’s sole railway line is back on track, with commuters jamming the Sabah State Railway Station here for their first ride in three years from Tanjung Aru to Beaufort, about 100km from the city centre.
The rail service had been temporarily stopped for the upgrading of the rail tracks and also to modernise the services.
The nearly 200km single line track starts at Tanjung Aru and ends at Tenom, in the interior division.
The Sabah State Railway has offered free rides for a week from yesterday.
After this grace period, the railway department will be charging RM4.80 for each adult, with a 50% discount for children below 12.

Commuters filled the 210 seats available in the train coaches to make the more-than-two-hours ride to Beaufort.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that as part of its modernisation process, the railway department will introduce air-conditioned coaches – with fares for the first class coaches expected to be three times that of the economy class fare.
