SEMPORNA, SABAH: The federal government has approved an allocation of RM15 million to develop solar electricity supply on seven islands off Semporna to benefit 15 villages, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said today.

"God willing, we will implement the project soon. If possible, we want to expedite the matter," he told reporters after launching the Mara activity centre at Bum-Bum Island near here.

Shafie said the project would enable the villagers to enjoy 24-hour electricity supply, unlike the limited supply now with the use of generators.

Solar energy was opted for in view of the location of the islands far from the electricity grid which would entail high connection cost, he said.
