TOKYO: An 80-year-old woman and her teenage grandson were rescued yesterday in northeastern Japan when the youth pulled himself out of their flattened two-storey house nine days after the earthquake and tsunami.

Jin Abe, 16, was seen calling out for help from the roof of the collapsed home in the hard-hit city of Ishinomaki, said the Miyagi prefectural police. Like other homes in northeastern Japan, they had lost electricity and telephone service in the March 11 earthquake.

He led them inside to his grandmother, Sumi Abe. Both were conscious but weak and had survived on the food they had in their refrigerator, said police.

The woman could not get out of the house because she has trouble walking, and the teenager, who was suffering from a low body temperature, had been unable until yesterday to pull himself from the wreckage, police said.

They were found by police who realised they couldn't get the woman out of the collapsed house and had to call other rescuers, he said. -- AP

Govenment spent RM28m to help flood victims

THE government spent RM27,938,057 to assist flood victims, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the amount was channelled to the victims through the Welfare Department and was spent on food supplies, blankets, mats and daily necessities.

"The government also provided a RM500 wang ehsan banjir (compassionate aid) for the families affected by the floods which struck last year and early this year,".

Nazri said of the figure, RM15.5 million was channelled to 30,948 families in Kedah, RM8.3 million to 16,457 families in Perlis, RM70,100 to 402 families in Terengganu, RM70,500 to 141 families in Kelantan, RM15,000 to 21 families in Malacca, RM52,000 to 104 families in Johor and RM23,500 to 493 families in Pahang.

"I admit there have been delays in payments as we have to verify if the victims are genuine flood victims and avoid anyone from taking advantage of the situation.

"Those who have not received aid should check with their village heads or district offices. If they have been left out, they need to get verification from the district office and the village head to receive the payment."

Dr Siti Hasmah's elder sister Saleha dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Paduka Saleha Mohd Ali, the elder sister of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital here this afternoon due to uterine cancer.

She was 88.

The special officer to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Sufi Yusoff, when contacted by Bernama, said Saleha breathed her last at 5.10pm.

Saleha's son, Zahedi Mohd Ali said his mother's body would be buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery before Zohor prayers today.

Saleha, the third of 13 siblings, was the patron of the Universal Peace Federation Malaysia. -- Bernama

National park, jungles in Merapoh gazetted as tiger research areas

TEMERLOH: Taman Negara and the jungles of Merapoh, Lipis have been gazetted as tiger habitat research areas in Pahang.

Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Khairiah Mohd Sharif said Taman Negara (National Park), the Main Range and several forests in Perak, Terengganu and Johor had been home to tigers.


"Tigers like cool wetland areas which offer them sufficient food sources," she told Bernama, here, today.

She said based on Perhilitan''s study, there were currently 500 tigers in the forests of the peninsula.

"They are totally protected and cannot be hunted or kept," she said.


According to the new Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, which took affect this year, those who kill, posses the meat, nails, skin or other parts of the tiger can be charged under Section 68 of the Act, which carries a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to RM500,000. -- BERNAMA

US nuclear regulator says US reactors safe

WASHINGTON: The top U.S. nuclear regulator on Monday said the agency has determined that U.S. nuclear plants continue to operate safely, despite concerns raised by the nuclear crisis in Japan.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a meeting on Monday to discuss how the agency plans respond to the Japanese crisis. -- REUTERS
