SEPANG: Malaysian students, evacuated from strife-torn Yemen, said it was better for them to return home as both lecturers and students in universities are “occupied” with the demonstrations.
Yemenia University Islamic studies undergraduate Zaidi Mat Zaid, 24, said that it was useless for him to attend classes as lecturers and more than 95% of his course mates were busy demonstrating.
“I think the Yemenis are really determined to oust the president,” he said when met at KL International Airport yesterday.
Arabic language student Fadhil Sheikh Anuar, 27, who lived some 10m from the conflict zone in Sanaa, said there were many people with firearms on the street and he was worried when they got closer to his home.
“We could not tell what would happen next in Yemen.
“So under the advice of the Malaysian embassy, I decided to come home with my wife and son,” he said, adding that he was hoping to return to Yemen to complete his studies at the University of Science and Technology in Sanaa.
On Thursday, Malaysia decided to evacuate the 849 Malaysians from Yemen, most of them students.
Inspired by the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, Yemenis too have risen to try and oust President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
