FESTIVE CHEER: RM100,000 will be distributed to 900 recipients
BALIK PULAU : The Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) has allocated RM100,000 as Hari Raya Aidilfitri aid for 900 recipients this year.
The aid will be distributed through 14 programmes held during Ramadan.
Perda chairman Shabudin Yahaya said the purpose of the aid was to help lessen the financial burden of households during the festive season.
He said it was also a good opportunity for Perda, its staff and local leaders to reach out to the people.
"Giving aid to help those in need has become an annual tradition.
"This year, our first programme is in Balik Pulau, where 250 people will receive RM27,500," he said at Perda's Ihya' Ramadan programme at Masjid Jamek Al-Ehsan here recently.
Senior citizen Timah Hassan, 70, who was one of the recipients, said she was thankful for the aid because she had no fixed income.
Timah said she had been living alone since her husband died and did not have a job to support herself.
"The money will help me pay for my eye treatment at the clinic," she said.
Another recipient Ismail Man, 80, said he was touched by the contribution from Perda and that he would use the money to prepare for Hari Raya.
Also present at the event were Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Balik Pulau member of parliament and deputy health minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, Bayan Lepas assemblyman Nordin Ahmad and Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad.
