LAHAD DATU: Only Malaysians who fled Kampung Tanduo after the armed Sulu group occupied their village were receiving aid, said assistant district officer Juramin Jaidi.
Amidst complaints from several villagers that they did not have rice, sugar, salt and milk, Juramin said that aid had been provided to 10 of the 15 families who fled the village.
He said government aid was only given to the 10 families who had been identified as locals, adding that the others did not have documents.
Juramin said that Tanduo village chief Rauk Mamut had helped the district office to identify the local families while advising it not to provide assistance to others as they were illegal immigrants.
He said the village head had also indicated to the local council that the paperless residents might be sympathetic to the Sulu group led by the brother of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III.
About 80 people from 15 houses in Tanduo are now living with friends and relatives in Kampung Tanjung Labian some 40km away.
Minda Abu Samma, 41, was among the 20 people who had told the media that they had not been receiving any help since they fled and had to rely on the kindness of Tanjung Labian folk for farm produce to feed their children.
They claimed that when they fled Tanduo, they had left all their belongings, including identification papers.
Juramin said council officers from Tungku had been directed to look into the matter.
