KUALA LUMPUR: Gullible women who fall in love with their Facebook crush can end up as drug mules.
Drug syndicates are using Facebook and other social networking sites as they are a great way to recruit these women.
Recently retired Federal Narcotics deputy director Deputy Commissioner Datuk Othman Harun said women who were bitten by the love bug were capable of doing anything for their lovers.
“They forge relationships with unsuspecting women and gain their trust and love before asking them to travel to another country with luggage which they often did not know contained drugs,” he said.
The syndicate members may even convince their women to become drug mules.
“They sometimes sweet-talk these women and convince them to carry the drugs with the promise of significant rewards,” DCP Othman said.
The other method the syndicates is using is to set up a front for their drug-smuggling activities.
They will send their unsuspecting highly-paid employees for overseas training and they will be asked to carry baggage which contains drugs.
DCP Othman said there were also cases where women were duped into thinking that they had won a holiday abroad.
“The syndicate would hide drugs in the luggage and insist the victim carry the bag and pass it to someone when they reach their destination,” he added.
Since 1991, a total of 900 Malay-sians have been detained in foreign prisons for various drug-related offences.
