KUALA LUMPUR: The police blamed the attitude of young road users for the high number of accidents during the festive season.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said out of 178 fatal motorcycle accidents recorded during the recent Hari Raya Ops Sikap, 100 of them involved those aged below 25.
“Fatal accidents involving cars also show similar pattern with the same age group being involved in 30 fatal accidents out the 67 recorded,” he told a press conference yesterday.
He also said most accidents were caused by human error and recklessness.
Ismail said the number of accidents during the latest Ops Sikap increased by 16.6% compared to last year’s.
“A total of 19,606 accidents were recorded in the recent Ops Sikap, which is 2,789 more than the previous one. The number of deaths have also increased from 248 to 289,” he said.
Selangor recorded the highest number of accidents with 4,794 cases followed by Johor, 2,655 accidents, and Perak with 1,642 accidents.
Fatalities involving motorcycle accidents also far outnumbered other vehicles with 178 out of 289 deaths.
Ismail said the numbers would only keep increasing if the attitude of road users did not change for the better.
“We have enforced the law and advocated road safety but nothing will change until the people’s attitude does,” he said.
He added that the only way to do that is through education.
