DOE: Nilai records API reading of 105

KUALA LUMPUR: Nilai in Negri Sembilan was the only spot with unhealthy air, with an air pollutant index (API) reading of 105.

In a statement, the Department of Environment said 34 other areas had moderate air quality, while it was good in 14 other areas as at 5pm yesterday.

Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam recorded a reading of 95 and Bukit Rambai, 94, while the level at Kuala Lumpur, Cheras, Port Klang and Batu Muda was 91.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), and 301 and above (hazardous).

The weather forecast by the Meteorological Department stated that areas like Arau, Kepong, Klang, Petaling, Sepang, Tampin, Batu Pahat, Jerantut and Tawau had not experienced rain for five consecutive days.

The department expects the haze to persist in the next few days as dry weather is forecast for a few states in the north as well as the west coast of the peninsula.

The department also advised the public not to carry out open burning.

The Health Ministry has issued a statement advising people to reduce outdoor activities in view of the looming haze.

Its minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said people should stay indoors as much as possible and use a mask when outdoors.

“Those who suffer from a cough, flu, asthma, sore eyes or chronic respiratory infection should go to a clinic as soon as possible if their condition worsens,” he said yesterday.

He also urged people to drink plenty of water, use air-conditioning when driving and wash their hands and face after outdoor activities.
