MALAKOFF Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) recently completed its Annual Charity Ride 2011 with 120 cyclists taking part in the 463km ride covering the trail from Lumut, Perak to Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s Charity Ride raised RM170,000 which benefited six welfare organisations in Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Organised by Malakoff for the sixth consecutive year, the event themed “Charity through Sports” was held from April 30 to May 2, with the company’s business associates contributing funds to benefit deserving charity homes along the route.

Malakoff corporate affairs and communications head, Yusop Rashid said: “Through the Malakoff Annual Charity Ride, we aim to bring together our employees and business associates from various backgrounds to enjoy a challenging sporting event over three days.

“In the process, we also want to do our bit by contributing to charity homes along the route. This event is a combination of community sports and community service,” he added.

Over 30 of Malakoff’s business associates made contributions to the charity fund. The major contributors of this year’s charity ride were Hicom Power, Allianz Insurance, KAF Investment, CIMB Group and Gas Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Since the inaugural ride in 2006, the event has raised and distributed RM372,380 to charity homes and orphanages throughout the country.

“Without the generosity of our business associates, we would not be able to organise this event. Malakoff would like to take this opportunity to thank all our business associates for opening up their hearts to the needy in our community and we look forward to their continuing support,” said Yusop.

This year’s ride benefited charity homes for children and old folks alike.

The welfare homes include Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia Cabang Sepang, Selangor, Jawatankuasa PDK Pantai Remis, Rumah Nur Kasih Bestari, Persatuan Kebajikan Al- Furqan Manjung, Maahad Tahfiz Al Ansar and Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia.

Over the last five years, contributions from business associates have also increased steadily from RM47,900 in 2006 to RM137,500 last year, with a record collection of RM170,000 this year.

Speaking after the ride, Sterling Insurance Brokers Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Abdul Halim Jantan, who has been a devoted cyclist for the last 10 years said: “I am very excited upon completing this year’s Malakoff Annual Charity Ride 2011. I look forward to joining future events like this held by Malakoff with my fellow colleagues and other sponsors.”
