JASIN: An RM18.4 million windfall will be shared among more than 15,000 headmasters, teachers and support staff of 586 primary schools as reward for improving education outcomes.
Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the incentive, under the government's new deal aimed at rewarding those who showed excellence, would be credited into the recipients' bank accounts.
He said headmasters would receive RM7,500 each while 607 teachers who were in the top five per cent of the 12,141 teachers, based on their performance appraisals, would receive RM1,800 each.
The rest of the teachers would get RM900 each.
"As for the support staff, 2,800 of them will receive a quantum," said Muhyiddin, who is deputy prime minister.
He was speaking when handing over the incentive at SM Tun Syed Zahiruddin in Ayer Tawar, Merlimau, yesterday.
Muhyiddin said the Education Ministry had initially targeted two per cent of the headmasters of the 7,635 primary schools in the country for the incentive but the Inspectorate of Schools had adjudged that 586 schools had fulfilled the criteria.
"We made a promise to headmasters, and academic and non-academic staff of primary schools who excelled that they would be rewarded. Today, I am pleased to announce the windfall for their dedication."
He said support staff also played an instrumental role in the success of headmasters and teachers.
He said the incentive for secondary school headmasters and teachers would be announced once the results of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination were out in three weeks.
On the success of the 586 schools, Muhyiddin said he was happy to see that 437 were in rural areas.
On schools that did not qualify for the incentives, he said the ministry would help them boost their performance.
"We will see to it that headmasters who did not achieve the target get to take courses based on their needs; they will also get guidance."
He then opened the RM28 million SM Tun Syed Zahiruddin. The school has 30 classes, 330 students and 25 teachers.
