SELAYANG:The Selayang Municipal Council's (MPS) Safe and Clean Programme has received a RM1.5 million allocation from the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
The funds will be used to upgrade the CCTV system that was installed there recently.
"With an upgraded system, we can monitor and control what is happening around us more efficiently," said MPS acting president Jaid Ehsan at the council's full board meeting.
Jaid added that MPS would also work closely with the police and residents' associations in the municipality to carry out crime prevention.
Meanwhile, Jaid said the council has collected RM15.3 million in assessment fees while the arrears stood at about RM1.2 million.
Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei, who brought up the CCTV issue, said the public had raised concerns over the non-functioning CCTVs.
She said according to the Federal Government, the police, too, has an allocation for CCTVs under the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) programme.
As such, she said both parties should work together to ensure the public's safety.
The meeting also saw the Department of Enforcement and Safety director Azmi Ismail suggesting that the council allocate about RM16,000 as an allowance for the Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia (RELA) teams to monitor various crime hotspots in Selayang.
In response, Jaid said the council will discuss the matter in the next meeting. In the meantime, he said, the council will use its enforcement officers and the police, to monitor the areas in Selayang
