More than 4,000 suicides in 2001-2010

KUALA LUMPUR: There were 4,118 suicides reported from 2001 to 2010, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said Tuesday.

1. He said emotional pressure caused by failure in life, family problems and loss of a loved one were among the factors most often cited for the suicides.
2. "Other factors are psychological disturbances such as depression and trauma, involvement in crime (suicide committed to escape punishment) and incurable drug addiction,"
3. Hishammuddin said "critical" financial problems and heavy involvement in gambling were also causes of the suicides.

He added that several non-governmental organisations were involved in efforts to prevent suicides through counselling and mental health awareness campaigns, among other activities. - Bernama
