Malaysian wins Asia's biggest student dance contest in Japan

Jackson Chua
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Jackson Chua does not just think he can dance. He certainly is a dancer extraordinaire!

On Thursday, the 22-year-old was crowned champion in Asia's biggest student dancing competition in Osaka, Japan.

Chua danced his way into the hearts of the judges to win the grand award in the 'Gatsby Styling Dance Contest'.

It was Malaysia's second time winning the award. Last year, another Malaysian, Alex Lim, won the award.

Organised by Mandom Corp, a Japanese beauty products company, Chua was among 1,653 individuals and teams who competed in the contest, an increase from last year's 1,491.

"Chua won over the audience with a performance that showcased his dance technique, charisma and supreme power of concentration.

"The result underscored (yet) again, the high level of dance technique in Malaysia," the company said in a statement.

The competition targets students from Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan -- the Asian economies where Gatsby products are sold.

The company said that seven finalists, who won through different rounds of the competition in each country and region, gathered at Shibuya's O-East in Tokyo recently to compete for the top prizes.
