Japan's Quake : All 242 M'sian students safe in Japan's Ground Zero

KUALA LUMPUR: All 242 Malaysian students in the regions worst affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan are “safe”, said the Higher Education Ministry.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung, when met at Parliament this morning, said the students residing in 10 prefectures surrounding Sendai, some of the worst affected areas by Friday's double tragedy, experienced tremors scaling magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale and above.

“All 242 were contacted and are considered safe,” said Hou, adding that there were no plans to evacuate the students back to Malaysia.

There are 2,465 Malaysian students in Japan and 1,521 registered with the Malaysian embassy. He said 1,327 are Malaysian government-sponsored students while another 201 are sponsored by the Japanese government. Another 937 are privately sponsored students.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay said the official statement by Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman yesterday evening still stood as of 11am this morning and the ministry would issue another official statement later in this evening.

Anifah had said all 5,009 Malaysians were safe and the Malaysian embassy in Tokyo has, as of yesterday, managed to contact 544 citizens in the affected prefectures.

The minister had also said appropriate preparations were being made to meet the needs for all Malaysian students until normalcy was restored.

He had also added there were no Malaysians residing within 50km of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
