Charity : Disabled take part in charity walkathon

HEALTHY ACTIVITY: Participants at the 'Walk for Children' event yesterday

KUALA LUMPUR: When he had an accident two years ago, Mohd Nor Saad not only lost both his eyesight but also his confidence.

Happily, that has changed.

The 20-year-old took part with thousands of other caring Malaysians in the "Walk For Children: 1Malaysia Goes Green" charity walkathon at Merdeka Square here yesterday. The event was co-organised by the International School of Kuala Lumpur in aid of Shelter Home Malaysia and Rumah Kasih Sayang.

"After the accident, I did not dare step out of the house to meet people, and I did not want to trouble my family members to guide me all the time," Mohd Nor told The Malay Mail.

"But I have since gained confidence to move about on my own and to take part in public activities like this event, in which I get to walk around Kuala Lumpur where I was born."

Mohd Nor, a member of the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB), completed the 1.8km race for the disabled, with the assistance of his best friend, Zoey Goh Shu Li.

Goh said: "I am very proud of Mohd Nor for completing the race, alongside people of various backgrounds, including other disabled."

Another participant, Isaac Hew Kien Foong, 17, a student at Sekolah Menengah Pandan Mewah, said: "This event allows us to get to know people from different cultures. Besides, walking is a healthy exercise."

The patron for the walkathon was the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

"I am happy the younger generation has become aware of the importance of environmentally-friendly activities and are also more caring towards the disabled," said Rosmah.

Besides the 1.8km race for the disabled, there were 5km and 3km races.

The event's other co-organisers included Dell, HSBC Bank, Maxis, and Conoco Philips
