LEE Chong Wei will be the highest paid player in the Indian Badminton League (IBL) on Aug 14-31 after he was snapped up by Mumbai Masters for US$135,000 (RM430,000) during the inaugural event's player auction in New Delhi yesterday.
Mumbai, owned by famous South Indian film star Nagarjuna and Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, won a bidding battle with Delhi Smashers to secure Chong Wei, whose base price was US$50,000 (RM160,000), as their icon player.
The IBL also involves four other teams -- Banga Beats, Hyderabad Hotshots, Pune Pistons and Lucknow Warriors -- and it will be held in six cities with a total 90 league matches to be played. Each team comprises five Indian senior and one junior shuttler as well as four foreign players.
National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek is also involved as the head coach of Delhi Smashers.
The top four teams in the league will proceed to the semi-finals.
