Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai who announced this, said the exercise would kick off in November.
“The ministry, through the Inland Revenue Board, will send its officers from the headquarters and branches in every state to help out with the registration exercise,” he told reporters after launching the 11th SIP International Prodigy Abacus, Mental Arithmetic Competition here yesterday.
The RM500 disbursement announced by the Government in Budget 2012 is aimed at helping households with a monthly income of less than RM3,000 and single mothers.
Lim said NGOs could also help out in the exercise.
“Under this effort, a total of RM1.8bil will be distributed to about 3.4 million households nationwide next January,” he added.
In Ipoh, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said an announcement would be made soon about the method of registration.
He said the board had engaged 2,000 additional employees to conduct the registration exercise.
He added that the cash would be disbursed through Pos Malaysia counters and banks to eligible applicants once the registration process was completed.
Ahmad Husni said cash payments would be made to those who lived in areas without banks and post offices.
“However, we have yet to decide who will undertake the cash payment exercise. We are thinking to make the cash payment in remote areas such as in Sarawak which does not have both services,” he added.
The board recently urged those who qualified for the assistance to be patient and not to visit the board’s service counters for now and wait until all the processes were ready.
It also said applicants would have to comply with certain criteria which the Finance Ministry would announce via major newspapers.
