More thunderstorms in Klang Valley

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Klang Valley residents should expect more evening thunderstorms throughout the coming week.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasted cloudy weather in the morning with thunderstorms in the evening and rain at night for several areas in Kuala Lumpur.

The areas include Sungai Besi, Jalan Duta, Kepong, Selayang, Setapak, Bangsar, Bukit Bintang, Ampang and Cheras.

Thunderstorms on Friday brought down trees that smashed into cars in several areas.

Many city roads came under ankle deep waters forcing congestions for several hours.

Meanwhile, the Smart tunnel flood control system would be monitored daily in view of the adverse weather, said its public relations officer Mohd Noor Mohd Ali.

He said the system allows it to receive a warning signal from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) an hour earlier in case of flooding in the city.

"Upon receiving the signal, we will close the Smart tunnel to traffic so it can be used to channel floodwater," he said.

"Once the signal is given, motorists will be updated periodically through the radio and information on tunnel closure will also be shown on the Variable Message System at various locations," he said.
