ALOR STAR: Kedah Health director Datuk Dr Marzuki Md Isa said a six-month screening by government clinics from January to June this year found 28,000 people, some in their 20s, to be at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Among the early symptoms detected were obesity, diabetes and hypertension, he said.
"These symptoms are caused by unhealthy eating habits, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle, mainly among men," said Dr Marzuki at a press conference in conjunction with World Heart Day here yesterday.
However, he said, more women died of heart diseases compared with men because they failed to detect the conditions in the early stages.
Dr Marzuki said women who were surrounded by smokers faced a higher risk as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke, in contrast to chain-smokers.
Nestle nutritional manager Cher Siew Wei said choosing a healthy diet was crucial to reduce the cholesterol level and avoid heart attacks. "It is important to choose a diet that is low in fat and high in fibre." -- Bernama
