20 MAYC volunteers going to Japan for humanitarian work

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty volunteers from Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC) will spend 10 days in tsunami and quake-ravaged Japan doing humanitarian work.
The first batch, for the MAYC Global Relief Tsunami Japan 2011 programme, will leave for the land of the rising sun on Oct 16.

It will be the association's first international humanitarian mission.

MAYC president Akhramsyah Sanusi said the programme would be different from other missions as the volunteers would be involved in cleaning up Ishinomaki city, among the most seriously affected by the tsunami and earthquake, which hit Japan in April.
Comprising 14 men and six women, he said the volunteers would be cleaning up mud-covered schools and public halls.

"We understand that what Japan lacks are youngsters available to clean up."

Akhramsyah said rather than bringing food supplies or items, the idea of a "work force" would be best, at present.

Asked if the association was planning to send a second batch of volunteers on the mission, Akhramsyah said this would have to wait as sending more people would require more planning and a bigger budget.

"However, we will see what we can do, after we receive feedback from volunteers joining the mission."
