JAKARTA: All Malaysian students in Aceh and Medan are safe following the 6.7 magnitude earthquake which struck the west coast of South Aceh early Tuesday.
As of 1.30pm Tuesday, the authorities have reported 10 people dead due to the quake which occurred at 12.55am local time.
Malaysian education attache in Indonesia Ludinata Misnun said: "All Malaysian students - 176 in Aceh and 612 in Medan - are safe."
He said in a statement that students in Aceh did not feel the quake because they stayed in the northern part.
However, the students in Medan, northern Sumatra, felt the quake because the epicentre was closer to the area, Ludinata said. Ludinata said the students had been advised to be ready to move in the event of a stronger earthquake occurring.
They were asked to get the latest from the local authorities and the Malaysian Consulate General in Medan and to quickly get out of their house if they felt a tremor, he said. - Bernama
