Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Chilean coast, no damage

Chile
SANTIAGO, Sept 14 (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.9 quake hit just off the coast of central Chile early on Wednesday, but the state emergency office said there were no reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 24 miles (38 km) north of the port city of Valparaiso and had a depth of 11.8 miles (19 km).

Valparaiso, Chile
Residents in the earthquake-prone country's capital Santiago, 60 miles (100 km) east of Valparaiso, felt light shaking from the quake.

The Chilean emergency office ONEMI said there were no reports of damage.

Last year a magnitude 8.8 quake killed more than 500 people and devastated towns, infrastructure and industries in south-central Chile.
