KUALA LUMPUR: No radioactive contamination was detected in water and soil samples taken nationwide, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said yesterday.
"Tests on rain, sea and tap water and also soil and vegetation samples taken at various points across the country had been monitored for high levels of radioactivity since April 2 but no traces have been found as yet.
"However, the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), which carried out the monitoring process, will continue its monthly sampling activities especially for sea water throughout Malaysia."
He said AELB was observing the radiological environmental level throughout Malaysia via the Environmental Radiological Monitoring System (ERMS) located in Chuping, Ipoh, Senai, Malacca, Kuantan, Sri Aman, and Kudat.
"Readings through the ERMS showed levels which were normal and safe for the public. Routine monitoring through the Radiation Portal Monitors stationed at Malaysian International airports did not detect any radioactive contamination."
He said according to the Meteorological Department, environmental emergency response centres under the World Meteorological Organisation predicted movement of radioactive materials from the Fukushima nuclear plant towards the north and northeast of Honshu Island and to the Western Pacific Ocean.
The Malaysian Meteorological Agency, together with Malawakil Vienna, Malawakil Tokyo and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, are working together to monitor the situation in Japan and its effect on Malaysia.
He said industry players needing verification on imported Japanese products (not food) to certify that they were not contaminated, could contact the Malaysian Nuclear Agency at 03-89251201/019-3877609 (Iberahim Ali) or 03-89256270/019-3888031 (Dr Zulkifli Hashim).
For enquiries on travel to Japan, the public can contact Wisma Putra directly at 03-88874570/03-88892746 or go to its website, www.kln.gov.my or Malawakil Tokyo
