Arau Railway Station ceases operation

KANGAR: After operating for more than 90 years, the Arau Railway Station ended its operations on Wednesday after its last passenger service to Kuala Lumpur at 7.50pm.

The closure of the oldest railway station in Perlis is to make way for the construction of the electrified double tracking railway project from Ipoh to Padang Besar.

Following the closure, the Arau Railway Station services have been moved to a temporary station in Kampung Titi Besi about 200m from the present site.

Despite the station's closure, food stalls at the station were still operating.
Arau Railway Station manager Mohd Nazri Ismail said the closure of the station would enable the upgrading of the public transportation system which will be more advanced and systematic.

"Even though the Arau Railway Station is closed, the transportation services are still in operation as usual except that the station location has changed."

Based on the history of railways in Perlis, the Federated Malay States railway system was connected to the Siamese Railway through Padang Besar on July 1, 1916.
