Thirty needy students from Bau to enter UiTM

KUCHING: Thirty needy students from Bau have received offers from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to further their pre-diploma courses under the Program Mengubah Destinasi Anak Bangsa (MDAB).

The recipients were chosen based on their SPM results with at least four credits and a family gross income of RM2,000 and below.

The programme initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is to help needy bumiputra students to further their tertiary education.

Under the programme, students would be exempted from paying tuition fees and will be provided with accommodation and allowances.

Assistant Minister of Environment and Public Health Datuk Peter Nansian said the programme was an opportunity for students to pursue their higher education despite their poor background.

“This programme is a stepping stone to obtain higher qualifi- cations despite being poor and living in rural areas where they cannot compete with the urban students who are better off in many aspects,” he said when presenting the offer letter to 30 students at the REDEEMS Centre in Bau, near here yesterday.

Some 600 students will benefit from the programme across the state to pursue their pre-diploma courses in UiTM Sarawak for the May-September semester.
