Quoting a study conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the Department of Wildlife Protection and National Park (Perhilitan), it said over 80% of monkeys caught from various towns and cities nationwide were found to be suffering from one of the diseases.
A researcher at UPM Dr Reuben Sharma said the contact between human and monkeys, particularly the wild ones, should be reduced.
Perhilitan director-general Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin said the big migration of wild monkeys from forests to residential areas was due to the food they could easily get.
According to the report, there are more than 150,000 monkeys loitering in towns and residential areas.
