JOHOR BARU: Beware if you get an e-mail stating that you have unclaimed funds from the Accountant General's Department. It may be a scam.
Simpang Renggam MP Liang Teck Meng, who received such an e-mail on Wednesday said he almost believed the contents.
“The e-mail contained information on the Unclaimed Monies Act 1965 and even quoted the Accountant General of Malaysia Wan Selamah Wan Sulaiman,” he said at the Chinese Press Club here yesterday.
Liang said to reinforce the contents of the e-mail, the sender also included a link to an article in The Star which quoted the Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hu-ssein as saying there was a total of RM4bil in unclaimed funds.
“I thought this was an official e-mail until I opened the attachment and found that I had over RM743,000 in unclaimed funds. That is when I knew it was a scam because honestly, I don't have that kind of money,” he said.
Liang said the sender required him to pay 10% of the unclaimed funds as processing fees to the department.
