Most dengue cases in Selayang

There has been a reduction in the number of dengue hotspots in
the Selayang municipality following fogging exercises.
SELAYANG: The Selayang municipality has earned the dubious honour of having the highest number of dengue cases in Selangor.
The issue was discussed at the council's recent full board meeting.

Three hotspots have also been identified, each at the Las Palmas Apartments in Bandar Country Homes, Phase 13 in Bandar Country Homes and Taman Tun Teja in Rawang.

Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Datuk Zainal Abidin Aala said there were 151 reported cases in the municipality up to March 15. However, no fatalities have been reported.

He said although the numbers were alarming, there has been a reduction in the number of hotspots in the municipality following various efforts by the council.

"In 2010, there were 11 dengue hotspots," he said.

The statistics were released by the council's health department which stated that there were three categories in the management of dengue.

The stages are controlled (where dengue cases are at a minimal), uncontrolled (where dengue cases are on the rise) and hotspots (where the number of cases surpasses 100 cases per month).

Zainal Abidin urged the council's directors and its vector control division to take urgent action to reduce the number of cases.

He said: "We have to aim for zero cases. It is alarming to note that in February alone 67 dengue cases were reported.

"The vector control division had conducted fogging on 45,639 premises, focusing mainly on the hotspots and this efforts will continue.

"There were nine cases reported in Bandar Country Homes to date, and we call on the councillors to conduct more gotong-royong programmes to rid the 24 zones of dengue, as well as educating the public on proper rubbish disposal."

Asked whether MPS would consider introducing jungle mosquitoes, like the Subang Jaya Municipal Council, to reduce the population of Aedes mosquitoes, Zainal Abidin said the MPS would look into the matter if the pilot MPSJ project was successful
