PETALING JAYA: The majority of drivers involved in major road accidents in the country were found to have been issued with multiple summonses and they are deemed to be part of about 1.44 million habitual traffic offenders.
If these drivers continue to commit serious traffic offences despite being booked numerous times by the police or Road Transport Department (JPJ), they will be slapped with demerit points, blacklisted and eventually taken off the roads.
JPJ director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the number of habitual traffic offenders in Malaysia could be way above the average of 12% of such drivers recorded by developed countries.
Meanwhile, despite the 50% discount offer on traffic fines being extended, only 700,000 or 4% of the 17.3 million outstanding summonses by the end of last month have been paid up.
The Government had granted the extension from the original deadline on Feb 28 after considering problems of long queues, lack of counters and a stalled computer system.
The extension ends on Thursday.
