Egypt Chaos : 1,000 students receive RM500 each

SHAH ALAM: About 1,000 students from Selangor who will return to Egypt to continue their studies received RM500 each yesterday.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar presented the money, given by state Umno and Yayasan Kelana Ehsan (YKE), at a function in De Palma Hotel here.

Noh said although the amount was not much, it was given as an encouragement for them to resume their studies.

"Flying back thousands of students to safety in two weeks was no easy feat, but our government achieved it through 'Ops Pyramid'.

"All of us are indebted to the government for acting immediately on vacating all of you from the chaos in Egypt," he said.

Of the 1,000 students present yesterday, more than 60 per cent are studying to be doctors.

More than 8,000 students were flown home between Feb 3 and 11 during a political turmoil in Egypt.
