SIX of the nine gold medals won by the Malaysian contingent at the recent Para Asia Game in Guangzhou, China, came from Sarawak athletes.
One of the gold medalists is Nabila Ahmad Sharif who won in the women’s badminton single event.
Nabila defeated Thailand’s Wandee Kamtam in straight set 21-14 and 21-13 to grab the gold.
Prior to winning the title, Nabila also won many other titles including the gold medals in both single and double at the Kuala Lumpur Para Asean Game in 2008.
She also won both gold medals in the single and double event at the Para Asean Game in Korat, Thailand, in 2008.
Nabila has been representing Malaysia since 2005 and has also won bronze medal in the Para Asean Game in the Philippines in 2005, but failed to win any medal at the Asean Para Game in Kuala Lumpur the following year.
Asked how many more years she could represent Malaysia, Nabila said: “I’m not very sure of that but I believe I still have another three or four more years.”
Nabila, who works as a radiographer at the Kuching Specialist Centre, said she was proud to be able to contribute to the state and nation in sports.
She said prior to the competition she trained under coach Johnny Ng at the Arena Sport Centre in Simpang Tiga.
Another Sarawak shutter Mohd Zambri Yusof, who partnered Hairol Fozi Sa’aba of Perak, won the bronze medal.
Zamri said he has won several titles at the international meets including gold medal at the Para Asia Game in Banglo, India, in the double and partnering Bakeri Omar of Malacca.
He also won a bronze medal in the single event at the Para Asean Game in Kuala Lumpur in 2009 and bronze in Korat, Thailand, in 2007.
Like Nabila, Zambri said he was still keen to play for the country
