New guidelines to stem cases of abuse in welfare homes

KUALA LUMPUR: A new set of guidelines are being finalised by Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to step up enforcement against increasing cases of abuse and negligence in welfare homes.

“The guidelines are to ensure that welfare home operators abide by the existing laws pertaining to the welfare of the residents,” said its minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil on Saturday.

She said the government would not tolerate any form of abuse or negligence and urged welfare home operators and caretakers to be more responsible towards the people under their care.

“This is a warning,” she said adding that the ministry would not hesitate to take stern action against homes found guilty of harming their occupants.

She called on the public to immediately report to the ministry if they suspected residents of orphanages or old folks homes were being abused or neglected.

“Prevention is the way to go. We don’t want to only take action after a child is abused,” she said adding that the ministry would soon be meeting with welfare home operators to brief them on the new guidelines.

Shahrizat said this after launching charity initiative ‘Mari Beramal Bersama Colgate’ which saw the company donate RM200,000 to 12 charity homes in the country.

The charity campaign was held in August and September last year. For every Colgate ‘charity twin pack’ toothpaste sold, 20sen was set aside for the selected orphanages.

Colgate-Palmolive Marketing Sdn Bhd Managing Director Issam Bachaalani said the sum of money raised had surpassed their original target of RM120,000.

“This says a lot about the generosity of Malaysians in contributing to charitable causes,” he said
