SEPANG: Parents of Malaysian students in Egypt have urged the government to sponsor half the price of return ticket once the situation has improved.
Civil servant Husin Ibrahim,55, said this is because not all parents can afford to buy return tickets to Egypt.
"Most parents are not well off as perceived by some people. Only five percent of parents can afford to buy the tickets.
"The government should foot at least half the ticket price as it is rather expensive," said the parent from Kelantan.
He was at KL International Airport (KLIA) to welcome son Mohd Abdul Azim, a first year student from Al-Azhar University.
Mohd Abdul Azim was among 567 Malaysian students who returned via Ops Pyramid with Malaysia Airlines and Saudi Airlines flights today.
Husin thanked the federal government for evacuating the students from Egypt irrespective of their political leanings.
Saridah Suman, mother of Alexandria University student Mohd Yady Abdullah hopes that the government would pick up the travel bills as most parents are poor.
"We fear that the students won't have enough to spend if the ticket price is deducted from their scholarship," she added.
Al-Azhar University student Mohd Hafiz Ahmad Rafi said the ticket price is a burden for most parents especially those with several children studying in Egypt.
"My sister Nur Hasanah is also a student in Egypt. I hope the government can pay half the ticket price as it costs RM1,800 per person one way," said the student from Kedah.
Ops Pyramid has evacuated 7,209 Malaysians from Egypt to Jeddah and 1,439 have been brought home.
