EVERY year Datuk DJ Dave celebrates his birthday the same way and in the same style.
Nothing too fancy, said the 63-year-old, but at least it was a meaningful occasion for him.
The veteran singer had been organising his birthday bash with orphans since his days working as a postal officer in Petaling Jaya.
Loved ones: Jagjit Singh feeding his son DJ Dave with a slice of the birthday cake.
“Last time people did not believe me when I said I want to take leave on my birthday to do charity shows at children’s home.
Once when his leave was not approved, he immediately tendered his resignation as he felt the promise to sing for the children was more important and fulfilling.
His birthday, which falls on the same day as Valentine’s Day, had grown to be a special day for him to also pay tribute to his father.
“Every year when I celebrate my birthday, I make sure my father is around. Without him, there will be no DJ Dave,” he said.
The singer, who has 38 albums to-date, said he chose not to celebrate at posh hotels but instead to hold a party which was less fancy but able to bring everyone together in a warm environment.
The recent occasion was held at the Damansara Autism Management Institute where some 180 children from five homes (Rumah Harapan, Lighthouse Children’s Home, Tara Foundation, Rumah Amal and Pusat Perlindungan Pernim) came together.
The birthday boy together with his daughter, Davina Farhana Dave, also took turns to entertain the children with several songs while the youngsters enjoyed the food served.
